Patriots' Day in Manipur is observed annually on August 13th. This date commemorates the historical event in 1891 when several Manipuri patriots, including Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, were publicly executed by the British for waging war against the British Empire.
The observance is rooted in the aftermath of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, a conflict that ended the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Manipur. Following their defeat, the British government tried the captured Manipuri leaders. On August 13, 1891, Prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal were hanged before the general public at Pheida Pung in Imphal, which is now known as Bir Tikendrajit Park. Other patriots were also executed or exiled on this and subsequent dates, marking a pivotal moment in the state's history.
As a state holiday, the day is marked by solemn ceremonies and official functions. The Governor and Chief Minister of Manipur lead the state in paying homage to the martyrs by laying wreaths and offering floral tributes at the Shaheed Minar monument in Imphal and other memorial sites. The event serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made to defend Manipur's independence and is a cornerstone of the state's collective historical identity.
